Native Taiwanese lost identity

Japanese record, 1895~1897, taiwanese identity system. There were chinese 16,474., 6,546 person will be deport in 2 years. Others will hold chinese immigrate identity keep live in Taiwan. Beside these person, there are 257,104 chinese will hold taiwanese identity.

After Dutch arrival, they hired chinese workers into Taiwan. But Dutch treated chinese as workers, not immigrate. Dutch did not do mission to chinese, no education to chinese, been exclude identity system. They were short term workers.

It is very clear record in Qing Dynasty’s history. During that moment only few thousand chinese escape.

Qing Dynasty is minor party government. It used very strict rules to protect native culture. During Qing era only usual 15,000 officers and soldiers lived in Taiwan. Qing also put a limitation in Taiwan let Officers and soldiers could not carry any relative into Taiwan. Must came alone. Otherwise work time limit in 3 years. After 3 years they will be force move back to China.

Also, Qing Dynasty use special identity system let new immigrate difficult to survival in Taiwan. Native’s field must belong native. Chinese could not involve, sale and buy. Many people believe that there are huge amount’s chinese immigrate during Qing Dynasty. But according Qing’s identity record. There are no any evidence proof Immigration tide.

Qing sea ban duration between 1644~1875. Taiwan into Japan after Sino-Japanese War(1894~1895). Only 20 years was free to immigrate into Taiwan in that moment. When Taiwan into japanese territory majority taiwanese were half chinese, half native(Rev.George Leslie MacKay). We can explain that during this moment. Around 50%’s taiwanese receive chinese culture.

How native into chinese?

Zheng Chenggong did huge process of assimilation policy in Taiwan.

Since Zheng Chenggong until Qing dynasty. Strong culture accompany with school education. Native started receive chinese character and last name. We don’t have strong social organization, people lived in tribe speaks very simple language, no way defend strong culture came from outside. After 200 years later, many native lost culture and history. Some native don’t want receive chinese culture, they immigrate into deep mountain.

2,550,000 population on 1895, when Qing lost Taiwan. During that moment Qing’s territory in Taiwan only include cityside. Majority mountain and field belong native.

After Japan take over Taiwan. Japanese government gave chinese immigrate 2 years to consider leave or into japanese. After chinese left, Taiwan Governor's Office limited chinese could not visit Taiwan for free. They need to carry passport and visa when they visit Taiwan.

First Census in Taiwan was 1905. There were 3,120,000 population in Taiwan. According japanese record, Pingpu 46,432. Takasago 110,000. Japanese 59,618. Foreigner(include chinese) 8,223. Islander 2,900,000.
